A 500-word essay is two pages double-spaced or one page single-spaced, and it is the most commonly assigned short essay length in secondary and first-year college courses. It is long enough for a proper five-part structure — introduction, three supporting points, conclusion — but short enough that every paragraph has to earn its place. Scholarship committees favour it because it reveals whether you can make a point without padding. The most common failure at this length is spending 150 words on background before reaching the argument, which leaves under 300 for the argument itself.

How to budget 500 words
Decide the word allocation before drafting. Writers who skip this step reliably over-invest in the opening and compress the ending.
| Section | Words | Paragraphs |
|---|---|---|
| Introduction + thesis | 50–75 | 1 paragraph |
| Body | 350–400 | 3 paragraphs (~125 each) |
| Conclusion | 50–75 | 1 paragraph |
How long does a 500-word essay take to write?
1.5–3 hours end to end: 30–45 minutes of planning and research, an hour drafting, and 30 minutes editing. That figure covers the whole job — reading, planning, drafting, and editing — not just time at the keyboard. Students consistently underestimate the reading and overestimate the drafting, which is why 500-word assignments started the night before come in thin on evidence rather than short on words.
Writing well at 500 words
Three body paragraphs is the natural fit
At roughly 125 words each, three body paragraphs give you a point, evidence, and analysis apiece. Four paragraphs at 95 words each usually means the analysis gets cut.
Put the thesis in the first 75 words
A 500-word essay has no room for a slow build. Markers reading a stack of them decide early whether you have a position; make it findable in the opening paragraph.
Write long, then cut 15%
Drafting to 600 words and cutting back to 500 produces a tighter essay than trying to land on 500 exactly. The cut forces you to drop your weakest supporting point.
What the word count usually excludes
Most briefs count the body of the essay only. The title page, abstract, reference list, footnotes, tables, figures, and appendices are normally excluded, and many departments allow a 10% margin either side of the stated limit. Both conventions vary by institution, so check your module handbook before trimming — going under a minimum is treated as an incomplete submission, while going over a hard cap is often cut off mid-sentence by the submission system. Paste just the body text into the word counter to get the number your marker will actually see.
